INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TIBETAN HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY, RELIGION AND ART (7th -17th C.)

We are pleased to announce the second notification of the International Conference on Tibetan History and Archaeology, Religion and Art (7th-17th C.) will be held in Chengdu, China in July 13-15, 2013; it is jointly organized by the Center for Tibetan Studies of Sichuan University and the Harvard-Yenching Institute.

II. Date and Location:

Date: July 13-15, 2013

Location: Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China

Tentative Schedule:

July 12  (Fri.): Registration.

July 13  (Sat.): Panel Discussion.

July 14  (Sun.): Morning: Panel DiscussionAfternoon: Museum Visits; Evening: Panel Discussion.

July 15 (Mon.): Panel Discussion.

July 16 (Tues.): Departure.

III. Topics:

1. The History, Archaeology and Art of the Tibetan Empire;

2. The History and Art of West Tibet;

3. Recent Discoveries of Tibetan and Sanskrit texts;

4. Tibetans during the Xixia, Yuan and Ming periods;

5. Tibetan Buddhist History and Philosophy. 

IV. Participants:

The total target number of participants is about 35. We aim to include foreign scholars from U.S.A and Europe, South Asia and East Asia, and Tibetan and Chinese scholars who work on Tibet and surrounding areas.

V. Coordination and Finical Supports:

The Harvard-Yenching Institute will support travel costs for scholars from Asian countries (India, Nepal, Pakistan, Japan and Korea). Scholars from other countries can apply for funding for air travel, which may be given on a need-only and first-come first-serve basis. If you would like to apply, please contact us by email before May 1, 2013. Boarding passes and a copy of your airtickets will be needed for reimbursement.

Sichuan University will cover the hotel room charges [excepting telephone charges, minibar etc.] and all meals from July 12 to 15, 2013.

VI. Paper and Presentation:

Participants will be asked to make their presentations with PPT (English PPT for Chinese speakers, Chinese PPT for English speakers). Each speaker will have available NO MORE than 25 (twenty-five) minutes, this INCLUDES interpretation. This will be followed by a 5 (five) minute questions-and-answers session. Please let us know if you need an interpreter for your presentation.

We expect all invited scholars to submit papers for publication following the conference. The collection will be published by a leading Chinese publishing house. Sichuan University will provide financial support for the publication.

VII. After the Conference

Participants will be responsible for the costs of their activities after July 15. Please let us know if you need our help to book the airticket to Ulan Bator for the next conference or somewhere else.

VIII. Appendix

Please find the titles of the papers/abstracts that were received and accepted so far. Do let us know if there are any mistakes in the translation. If you still would like to participate in the conference, please submit the abstract before May 1, and your entire paper before June 1, 2013.
