The First Training Program on Tibetan and Sanskrit Reading

The first Training Program on Tibetan and Sanskrit Reading sponsored by the Research Center for the Study of West China at Sichuan University for doing Collaborative Research with the J. K. Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University will take place at Sichuan University from July 1 to July 15, 2018. It is organized by the Center for Tibetan Studies of Sichuan University (CTS of SCU).

 

The training program will be jointly taught by professors from Sichuan, Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford universities, and will recruit young instructors, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students from around the world. It aims to arouse and develop students’ interests in Tibetan Studies, to help students improve their Tibetan and Sanskrit language ability, and to guide students to engage in discussions of academic topics.

 

Eligibility and Prerequisite:

 

1. All young instructors, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students under the age of 45 from universities and academic institutions in China and abroad, who are engaged in Tibetan Studies, are eligible to apply.

 

2. They are required to have some basic understanding of Tibetan or Sanskrit, and to be influent in Chinese and English.

 

Courses: (July 1st – 15th, 2018)

 

9:00am-11:30am Monday, Wednesday and Friday

 

Advanced Classical Tibetan [Selected Works of Shākya mchog ldan (1428-1507)]

 

Instructor: Prof. Leonard van der Kuijp (Professor of Tibetan and Himalayan Studies; Chair of South Asian Studies /Inner Asian and Altaic Studies, Harvard University)

 

Assistant: Prof. Gaerrang (CTS of SCU; University of Colorado at Boulder Ph.D., 2012 )

 

9:00am-11:30am Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

 

Intermediate Classical Tibetan (The biography of the venerable Chos kyi sgron ma (1422- 1455), the third reincarnation of the wisdom-dakini Bsod nams ’dren)

 

Instructor: Prof. Hildegard Diemberger (Director of The Mongolia & Inner Asia Studies Unit, University of Cambridge; IATS General Secretary)

Seminar: Special Topics in Tibetan Studies

Reading the Meghadūta by Kālidāsa

 

Instructors: Prof. Diwakar Nath Acharya (Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics, Oxford University, Teaching via Skype)

 

Prof. Luo Hong (CTS of SCU; Beijing University Ph.D., 2007)

 

5:40pm-9:40pm Independent study sessions

 

7:00pm-9:00pm Review sessions with tutors to answer questions and to provide guidance

 

Tutors: Profs. Xu Yuanqin and Zhang Yanqing (Center for Tibetan Studies of Sichuan University)

Registration:

 

1. Students can register for one of the four courses or for all four, and the number of students for each course is no more than 25.

 

2. Every applicant is required to submit the attached form. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcomed to provide a recommend letter from their advisor.

 

3. All applicants are exempt from tuition fees. The organizers will provide reading materials, classrooms and access to the library of the Center for Tibetan Studies of SCU.

 

4. All applicants will be responsible for their transportation to and from Chengdu and their room and board.

 

5. Deadline for registration: June 15, 2018.
