Title: Lithic assemblages from the Chang Tang region, northern Tibet / P. Jeffrey Brantingham, John W. Olsen & George B. Schaller.
In: Antiquity 75 (2001): 319-327
Classification: 5.0.5 - East Asia - as related to South Asia -- Archaeology (Pre- and Protohistory)
Keywords: Geographical NORTH TIBET Chronological 30,000-5,000 B.P. General STONE TOOLS; BLADES; PALAEOLITHS; LITHIC ANALYSIS; HUNTER-GATHERERS; FORAGERS; PALAEOLITHIC PERIOD; PREHISTORY Personal
Annotation: Presents new evidence from surface stone tool assemblages collected in the Chang Tang reserve of northern Tibet at elevations above 4,500 meter. A number of assemblages contain unique Upper Palaeolithic blades and bladelets. Microblade cores, blanks and tools are also found. Foraging groups of humans may have first colonized the Tibetan plateau during the Upper Pleistocene or early Holocene. The Chang Tang microblade technologies are likely younger than 15,000 years, and may date as late as 5,000-4,000 B.P. The limited evidence available indicates that the environmental extremes were met with flexible and successful behavioural strategies involving high levels of mobility and reliance on stone tool technologies.

The Lukhang
A hidden temple in Tibet

by Ian Baker; photos by Thomas Laird

¡¡¡¡The wall inscriptions that accompany many of the specific images are drawn from a 15th century work entitled Kunsang Gongdu, The Realization of Vast Beneficence, a compendium of Dzogchen teachings revealed by the Terton, or "treasure revealer", Pema Lingpa. The Lukhang ¡¡murals illustrate key episodes in the life of this great master, a direct ancestor of the Sixth Dalai Lama who is credited with the Lukhang's original design at the turn of the 17th century.
